CASHS Programs Receive Regional Recognition

Two Chambersburg Area Senior High School programs were selected by the Shippensburg University Superintendent Study Council for recognition as regional Exceptional Programs in the field of education.  The CASHS School-2-Work partnership with JLG and the CASHS Navy Junior ROTC were chosen from among dozens of programs for their effectiveness, innovation and impact on the educational and life outcomes of participating students.

The CASHS S2W partnership with JLG industries began in 2018 as a bilateral prototype between the Chambersburg Area Senior High School and JLG Industries that connected JLG with apprentice-level workers in exchange for an opportunity for paid internship experience at local JLG operations.  In addition to work experience and a regular paycheck, the CASHS students also receive work-study credit toward graduation.  What began in 2018 as a prototype program with just a handful of carefully selected CASHS Seniors has grown into a multi-district program with over 100 students and 20 participating schools.

The CASHS NJROTC is a citizenship and leadership development program of the Chambersburg Area School District and the Naval Service Training Command.  Founded in 2014, the program focuses on preparing students to enter society as productive and responsible citizens immediately upon graduation.  More than 1250 Cadets have participated in the CASHS NJROTC, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.  Cadets have amassed over 16,000 hours of community service with 93 Cadets choosing military service and another 8 enrolled in programs leading to commissioning as a Navy or Marine Corps Officer.  Cadets in the program have a 48% honor roll rate and an amazing 98% graduation rate.

The programs were recognized at a regional forum on March 20th hosted by Shippensburg University which featured presentations on Exemplary Programs from 10 school districts and the Lincoln Intermediate Unit.  Mr. Bradley Ocker (CASHS Principal), Mrs. Cynthia Jewart (CASHS Cooperative Education Teacher) and Mr. Chad Zimmerman (CASD Career Readiness Coordinator), Ms. Amanda Heinbaugh (JLG HR Director), and Ms. Haley O'Donnell (JLG Sr Talent Acquisition Specialist) represented the School-2-Work program.  Mr. Bradley Ocker and retired Navy Commander Bruce Apgar (CASHS NJROTC Senior Naval Science Instructor) represented the Navy Junior ROTC program.
