Dear Parents/Guardians:

Chambersburg Area School District is committed to providing the safest possible learning environment for our students. Over the years, we have taken great steps to secure our schools (locking exterior doors, installing monitored entry systems, adding a district police force, implementation of School Gate Guardian, and installing security cameras).

Many schools across the country use a method called “Lockdown” or “Modified Lockdown.” In the event an unauthorized person enters the school building, an alert is announced. Students and staff are instructed to lock their classroom doors, turn off the lights, and hide while remaining quiet. This is the procedure that CASD has followed for numerous years; however, research shows students and staff must be provided with more options when confronted with an intruder.

CASD has enhanced the traditional lockdown with procedures that experts across the country endorse, including the Department of Homeland Security, the Pennsylvania State Police and the Chambersburg Borough Police Department to increase the chance of survival during an intruder incident. Implementation began in the 2017-2018 school year with ALICE Training, but the Chambersburg Area School District will be moving to institute Run, Hide Fight Training and Instruction to be implemented across the district.

What does Run, Hide, Fight mean?

  • Have an escape route and plan in mind
  • Leave your belongings behind
  • Run regardless of whether others agree to follow
  • Help others escape, if possible
  • Prevent others from entering an area where the active shooter may be
  • Call 911 when you are safe

  • Hide in an area out of the shooter’s view
  • Lock the door or block the entry to your hiding place with tables, chairs or anything
  • Silence your cell phone so that you are not detected by the shooter

  • Fight as a last resort and only when your life is in imminent danger
  • Attempt to incapacitate the shooter
  • Commit to your actions…your life  depends on it

Safety continues to be the number one priority in the CASD. All CASD staff have been trained and certified in Run, Hide, Fight Training and numerous other trainings provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Safe Schools. In the coming weeks, students will begin to practice drills associated with this framework.

Please contact the District Police Department or the Administration Building at (717) 263-9281 to discuss Run, Hide, Fight or with any questions or concerns.
