Back to School Update

Dear CASD families,

Yesterday, over 9,000 students returned for the 2022-2023 school year. I had the opportunity to visit buildings during the day, and it was incredible to see all the smiling faces and the anticipation of students. As the school year begins, we have a few important updates for you below.

  • CASD Inservice & Staff Recognition: This week, CASD staff participated in three days of professional development/training, staff/parent meetings, building and room preparedness, and more. The inservice days kicked off with an opening ceremony that recognized 7 retired staff (combined 249 years of service) to CASD as well as 6 current staff for over 162 years of service. We truly appreciate and thank these staff members for their exemplary dedication to our students.

  • Construction Update: This summer, CASD utilized PA Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funds to renovate Buchanan, Falling Spring, Guilford, and Lurgan. Each school is receiving new floors, windows, light fixtures, and ventilation systems. What we are able to accomplish with the ESSERS funds for these four buildings would have taken us 10 years to do within our normal budget. We are excited to have completely refurbished buildings for our kids and staff!

  • Chambersburg Peach Bowl High School Football Showcase: Community members are invited to the inaugural Peach Bowl Showcase starting tonight at the CASHS Trojan stadium. The event is composed of various high school football teams from Central Pennsylvania, PIAA District 3, competing against teams from outside of the region, including cities such as Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and more, with our Trojans hosting the headline game on Saturday night. We hope to see you there! Read more:

My sincere thanks to all parents/guardians, staff, students, and volunteers who made the first day of school a resounding success. We look forward to all the creative and exciting ways your child(ren) will learn this year.

With Trojan Pride,

Kurt P. Widmann
Acting Superintendent
