Although only officially in commission since October of 2019, the Chambersburg Area Senior High School Naval Junior ROTC Program is quickly building a strong reputation in the local community and nationally! In a ceremony at the Chambersburg Area Senior High School on May 20th, Dr. Dion Betts, Superintendent of Schools, read a proclamation designating Chambersburg NJROTC a “Distinguished Unit” for the 2020-2021 academic year. Distinguished Unit designation is a highly coveted status that is bestowed on only the top 10 percent of more than 600 NJROTC programs nationwide.
Founded as a Naval National Defense Cadet Corps in 2014, the program first achieved distinction in the 2019 school year when it was designated a “Unit Achievement” winner and subsequently commissioned as an official Naval Junior ROTC program that October. In February 2020, the CASHS NJROTC Drill Team qualified for the National Academic, Drill and Physical Fitness Championships and was designated for the first time as a Distinguished Unit earning “Most Improved” status in the Northeast Region.
On the trail to the Distinguished Unit award this year, the Chambersburg Cadets took fourth place in the regional drill competition (despite pandemic restrictions), hosted two virtual quiz bowls, hosted a marksmanship competition and competed in multiple academic and marksmanship competitions. Most notably, the Cadets found innovate ways to stay connected to the community by completing hundreds of hours of community service and more than a dozen Color Guard Ceremonies.
In 2021, the CASHS Cadets were led by Cadet Lieutenant Commander Brayden Boyd, Cadet Lieutenant (JG) Aiden Coffey and Cadet Senior Chief Petty Officer Micaiah White.
The Naval Junior ROTC Program is a citizenship development program of the Chambersburg Area Senior High School and the Naval Service Training Command.
