Keystone Exams: Opt-out for 2019-2020 Students
- Students who were enrolled in Keystone Exam trigger courses for the spring 2019-2020 school year are exempt from federal accountability. However, for all who are in the class of 2022 and beyond they are still held to the Act 158 graduation requirements.
- Under Act 158, there are five pathways to graduation that will apply to all students from the class of 2022 onwards. Two of the five pathways are dependent on results from the Keystone Exams. LEAs are required under Act 158 to provide these options to students as pathways to graduation for the class of 2022 and beyond.
- In accordance with Act 158, statewide graduation requirements take effect with the class of 2022. Act 158 provides five options for meeting graduation requirements: (1) Keystone Proficiency Pathway, (2) Keystone Composite Pathway, (3) Alternate Assessment Pathway, (4) Evidence-Based Pathway, and (5) Career and Technical Education Pathway.
LEAs have a choice:
- Enroll their cohort of students who were scheduled to take the keystone exams in the spring of 2020. If the LEA decides to enroll their cohort for the keystone exams parents will be able to opt their children out of the exam without being held to normal regulations.
- Opt out the cohort of students who were scheduled to take the keystone exams in the spring of 2020. If and LEA makes this choice they must make the decision public at a school board meeting, and publicize it on their website. If the LEA decides to opt the cohort out of the keystone exams then it is the responsibility of the students to opt in to take the exam during one of the keystone windows for the 2020-2021 school year.
Recommendation:
Chambersburg Area School District will be opting out of the Keystone Exams for the 2019-2020 students. Upon request parent/guardian will have the option to have their child take the Keystone exam. Students will graduate following one of the other 3 pathways outline in Act 158.
