Winter Weather Information
The Chambersburg Area School District (CASD) encompasses over 250 square miles, making it the 37th largest school district in Pennsylvania by geographic area. As such, the District takes very seriously the potential threat to student and staff safety that hazardous roads caused by winter weather can present.
CASD Transportation staff and District leadership are constantly evaluating weather information provided by a variety of services, including official forecasts by the National Weather Service. Based on weather predictions and models, District administrators evaluate the likelihood of a weather event impacting driving conditions.
During a winter weather event, CASD Transportation staff constantly monitor road conditions, both by personally driving a variety of roads across the District, and by seeking input from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, the PA State Police, and Chambersburg Borough officials. In addition, District leadership is in communication with surrounding school districts regarding the actions they will take.
If a winter weather event poses a risk to student and staff safety, the District will communicate a delay, cancellation, or early dismissal to all parents/guardians and community members through the following avenues as soon as possible:
- Automated Phone Call and E-mail to CASD Parents & Guardians:
- Note: this system will only work effectively if the contact information on file for your child is accurate. To verify your contact information, please call your child's school.
- Via District Website:
- Winter weather announcements will be made both on the CASD homepage (https://www.casdonline.org/) and on the delays and cancellations page (https://www.casdonline.org/Page/20)
- Via District Social Media:
- Twitter: https://twitter.com/CASDNews
- Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CASDNews/
- Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/CASD_News/
- Via Local Media Outlets:
- The following media outlets will be contacted with information regarding weather events: WGAL, FOX43, WCHA/MIX95, WHAG/NBC25, ABC27, WEEO, WCRH, WAYZ 104.7, STAR 92.1, WJAL, and WITF.
The safety of CASD students and staff remains the number one concern when determining a delay, cancellation, or early dismissal. We ask for the community’s help during winter weather events by reducing speeds on impacted roads, allowing for more time to reach a destination, and remaining alert and aware of students being picked up and dropped off by buses.
