Chambersburg Area Senior High School is pleased to announce the conversion of its Navy National Defense Cadet Corps program to a funded Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps. Both programs are Citizenship Development Programs of the Naval Service Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill. Chambersburg NNDCC was launched in 2014 as a locally-funded, credit-granting elective at the Chambersburg Area Senior High School.
Over the course of the last five years, the CASHS NNDCC has completed a variety of inspections, training and competitions in pursuit of the goal of NJROTC conversion. Winning Unit Achievement Distinction in 2018/19 school year, the CASHS Program was authorized for conversion as soon as an opportunity became available. On September 16th, the Navy offered this conversion which was accepted unanimously by the Chambersburg Area School District School Board at a regular meeting on September 24th.
To the community, appearances will remain the same. Senior Naval Science Instructor Commander (RET) Bruce Apgar explains, “We have always anticipated this conversion and have held our program to the highest standards of a full NJROTC unit since the beginning to ensure the expected transition would be smooth and seamless. What this conversion means to our Cadets is more opportunity for community involvement and expanded opportunity for our Cadets to compete across the northeast region with the goal of one day travelling to National Championships. What the conversion means to our community is significant funding relief as many of the costs associated with operating the program will be reimbursed by Naval Service Training Command.”
NJROTC Area 4 Manager Commander (RET) Jimmie Miller will preside over a formal commissioning ceremony on October 16th, 2019 in the CASHS Auditorium. The public is invited to this event with doors opening at 1:30pm and guests requested to be seated by 1:45.
