District to Receive $25,000 Grant for Security Upgrades
On October 31st, the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD) announced that Chambersburg Area School District (CASD) qualified to receive a $25,000 grant for security upgrades. CASD is one of 496 districts in the commonwealth that will receive grants that total $12.4 million.
“Our goal is to provide a safe and welcoming environment for students to learn and grow,” stated Joseph Padasak, Superintendent at CASD. “These funds will help to achieve that goal by providing various security upgrades in our buildings that will help protect students in the event of an emergency.”
The grants are a result of Act 44 of 2018, signed into law by Governor Tom Wolf in June. The act created a School Safety and Security Committee that develops criteria for school entities to use in performing security assessments and determines eligibility for security grants.
The $25,000 grant awarded to the district is Part A of the School Safety and Security Grant Program created by Act 44. The district also applied for Part B, a competitive grant, and is seeking over $1 million in funds for additional security upgrades and training. The committee will begin reviewing Part B applications on November 20th and may award all, part, or none of the requested amount.
