Breakfast Program
The Chambersburg Area School District offers meals to all students attending one of its schools. The district participates in the the National School Breakfast Program(SBP). The SBP is regulated by the federal government under USDA and Food and Nutrition Services(FNS). The regulations provided by USDA and FNS are updated every few years to assure that current medical and dietary guidelines are being followed.
So, What is a School Breakfast?
No matter the age or grade, the school breakfast program offers four(4) basic components, which are Grains, Protein, Fruits, and Milk, as shown on the above chart. The student does not need to take all of the items, but the student does need to take at least three of the items, and one of those three items must be a fruit.
-
Entrees, contains Grain or Protein -- student may take 1-2 oz
-
Fruits -- student may take 2
-
Milk -- student may take 1
...so that the student may actually take all 4 components to make a full meal or may take as little as 3 components as long as one of them is a Fruit or a Vegetable.
Note that some of the portion sizes are different at Elementary School and Middle School and Senior High School based on the Nutritional Requirements provided by USDA.
In all school meals, the fruits offered are both canned (in light syrup or juice pack) and fresh. The vegetables are cooked from frozen and fresh. All milk offerings are 1% white and Fat Free Flavored.
