This process is initiated by either a student's parents or teacher. When the process is initiated by the student's teacher, the teacher completes a referral packet which is submitted to the school psychologist for review. At that point, the student's parent(s) are contacted to determine whether or not the assessment is to be completed. A parent(s) initiated referral is started with a written request. The parent(s) jot down a brief statement requesting the assessment, along with a reason why they feel the assessment is needed. Unless there are extenuating circumstances, we generally begin with the Child Study Team process. The Child Study Team process provides a way for staff and/or parents to bring concerns they may have about a student to the attention of the appropriate personnel within the school. Generally, this team consists of the classroom teacher, building principal, guidance counselor, intervention coach (when appropriate), and the school psychologist. Parents are also included and will typically be invited to come into the school in order to participate in the team meeting(s). Through this process, a plan may be established and implemented in an attempt to assist the student with whatever difficulties he or she may be experiencing.
If you feel as though your son or daughter is in need of the Child Support Team, please contact his or her teacher so that the process can be initiated.
