The first day of school for students will be Thursday, August 24, 2023.

ESL classes will not begin for a few weeks.  We will be testing to identify new students.  You will be notified if your child will receive ESL instruction after testing is complete.

Parent Information for ACCESS for ELLs

ACCESS for ELLs is an English language proficiency test that measures student academic English language skills.  ELLs take an English language proficiency test every year.  Testing helps teachers understand whether students have the necessary language skills to fully participate in the classroom.  Your child's teachers use these test scores to decide how best to teach your child.  Test scores also help teachers track your child's progress in learning academic English and help schools decide what English language support services to provide.

Your child does not need to study for ACCESS for ELLs .  The test is an opportunity to demonstrate all the ways that they understand and communicate in English.  Prepare for test days by making sure your child gets plenty of sleep and eats breakfast.  A free breakfast is offered each morning to all students at Buchanan.  Doors open at 8:40 am for students who would like to eat breakfast at school.  Ask your child to bring a fully-charged Chromebook and charger to school each day, as the test is administered online.

Testing will begin on January 8.  Students will be given a listening, reading, speaking, and writing assessment.  Student scores will be returned to the district in May or June.  Test scores will be sent to parents in August.

    Thank you.

    April 2024

PSSA testing will begin soon.  Students will be participating in the following assessments:

April 23, 24, and 25 PSSA English Language Arts (Grades 3-5)

April 30 and May 1 PSSA Mathematics (Grades 3-5)

May 2 and 3 - PSSA Science (Grade 4 only)

Testing begins promptly at 9:05.  Please make certain that your child arrives at school on time. Please encourage your child to get plenty of rest, eat a healthy breakfast, and do his/her best on the test.   Please remind your child to bring a fully-charged Chromebook to school each day, as the test is administered online.  All other electronic devices (cell phones, tablets, Smartwatches, etc.) should be kept at home, as they are not permitted in the testing sessions.

As always, thank you for your support in our efforts to educate your child.  If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact the school.
