Building Reading and Writing Skills at Home
- Have your child read (OCR decodables and books of choice)to you several times a week, if possible. The time is to create a love for reading. Encourage your child to use the decoding skills being taught in school. Ask comprehension questions such as: What was the story about? Who were the characters in the story? Where was the setting? What was the problem/solution? What was your favorite part? Have your child retell the story in sequence.
- A goal is to help your child to build reading fluency(pace) and read with expression (sounding like a story teller).
- Read to your child. This will help your child to hear what a fluent reader sounds like. Be sure to talk about the story after you modeled fluency.
- Writing skills that you can practice: Encourage your child to write neatly and to use capital letters, lowercase letters and punctuation correctly.
