July 28, 2020 - Updated 2020-2021 School Year Proposed Reopening Information
Dear CASD Families,
CASD administrators and staff are constantly evaluating the COVID-19 pandemic, both locally and nationally, as we seek to return students and staff to school. Our first priority will continue to be keeping students and staff safe, and, when possible, bringing students back into our school buildings. However, as data and circumstances change, so must our response.
After reviewing local data showing a sustained rise in COVID-19 cases (e.g., just doubled in one week) in Franklin County, feedback from the recent public forum, reservations of a great many community members regarding facial coverings, staff concern about their own safety, our ability to fully staff and manage schools due to quarantining and other factors, the administration will present our third and we believe our final proposal for school opening. The CASD school board will vote on this proposal on August 4.
The final proposal for reopening includes a Virtual Online School Opening beginning August 24 (moved from August 20 to allow for more professional development). Students will engage in live meetings and interactive instruction daily using laptops and a Learning Management System. Laptops are being distributed to all students in August. Specific details regarding the delivery of education will be outlined for general education and special education students after the August 4 meeting.
We understand that any plan that does not allow for schools to operate as it did prior to the shut down last March will create very real challenges for families and students alike. We are aware of these challenges and weighed them heavily in our decision to develop and implement a plan that places the health and safety of students and staff first. It is our ultimate goal to return students back into our buildings when the data suggests it is safe to do so.
Thank you for your input, suggestions and stated concerns which led the District to create a realistic, actionable and safe reopening proposed plan which assures instructional opportunity and accountability for every student. We encourage you to join us for our virtual board meeting on August 4th to hear more details. Information about the meeting and how you can provide comments and questions can be found here.
