Dec 8th to Feb 1st
Starting on Dec 8th each 5th-grade student will be given a Newbery Award Challenge Packet during their library class. Each 5th-grade class is being asked to read 50 books (which equals out to about 2 books per student). They will have 8 weeks to find and read as many Newbery books as they can in our school library, classroom library, public library, home, or bookstore.
Students will learn why and how books win the Newbery Award and they will be given a list of Newbery Award Winners. They will have time in class to look up some of the titles and find them in the library.
Students are being asked to read at least one Newbery book, write up one book review, and return it to the library. Students can post their book review for extra credit on the library’s Newbery Book Review Blog. This Blog can be found at the Scotland Library’s Webpage under Book Review Blog.
Book Review Outlines will be given out in the Newbery Challenge Packet in library class. Book Reviews will have to be posted by Feb 1st for credit.
Each Class which meets the 50 book goal will receive a Party sometime in February. (Student in the winning class must have read at least one book to be invited to the Party.)
The top readers across all 5th grades will have win Newbery Books, some of which are autograph.
